Adapted from Edna Ferber's sweeping novel about the Cotton Blossom, a
floating theater in the post-Reconstruction Deep South, "Show Boat" is
considered an American musical masterpiece. The original 1927 production
was unique in the way it combined serious themes such as racial tension,
marital problems and alcoholism with a rich Broadway score and a lavish
stage presentation. A new version was unvieled in 1994 to unanimous
critical acclaim. The Tony Award winning production of "Show Boat" played
on Broadway for 951 performances and also toured North America. When it
finally ended its run in 1998, it had been enjoyed by over 10 million
people.
