Depends on which side you talk to. The musicians will tell you
it's about replacing musicians with recordings, the producers
will tell you it's about the minimum band size.
Both sides are correct: the current minimum is 25 players for a
broadway musical. With rock music becoming the basis for
scores, that number is excessive. IF a show is written for a
rock'n'roll combo of 5 to seven musicians, that leaves a lot of
musicians sitting around. Producers would like to lower the
minimum to seven. Musicians fear that this will mean that for
larger musicals, producers will hire seven players and use
sequenced recordings to cover the rest.
Eventually, I suspect they will compromise; a minimum based on
the score, and a ban on sequenced recordings.
