Help naming this film

Dear Folks,
I've been trying to think of the name of this movie for weeks. The
plot goes:
An actor, who is a waiter in a restaurant, is taken aback when sees
his former wife and her husband sit at one of is tables. Most of the
movie is a flashback to when he started out as an actor, married the
woman, and experiencd little success. He musters the courage to
interact with the couple and the woman wishes him luck. At the end, he
eventually achieves success by staring in an off-Broadway play that
becomes so popular that it moves to Broadway.
I don't recall the names of any of the actors, which is why I'm having
trouble with the title.
