I guess you wouldn't necessarily care how well your albums do, but you would care how good they are. Again, the Springsteen-Buffett contrast: When Springsteen put out Nebraska or Joad, I think he knew they weren't going to be hot sellers, or even popular among many of his fans, but they were the albums he wanted to make. I don't think Buffett would ever put out an album that he didn't think would appeal to his fan base. Buffett hasn't had a big selling album outside his fan base since the early 80s. He has a record company that let's him put out whatever he wants, as long as he rakes in the dough on tour. A few years ago, he came out with an album that was more like a broadway play than a rock record. I went to see him that summer, and he didn't do 1 song from the album. Buffett basically puts out the albums and could care less how many he sells, as long as the fans still show up for the tour.
