Re: BROADWAY shows with SHORT runs you saw and/or LIKED Group: rec.arts.theatre.musicals Date: Sat, Mar 29, 2003, 2:31pm (EST-1) From: email-address-deleted (robert=A0armstrong) Rags and Johnny Jones were good enough. I didn't love them either found them reasonably entertaining, as much so as better-reviewed shows such as Evita, Rent and Chorus Line. --------------------------------------------- I enjoyed RAGS much more than any of the others above. And in spite of later winning the NY Drama Critics Award, Broadway's EVITA (deservedly) got mostly terrible reviews. ---------------------------------------------- RA: Good News: I saw the real 1927 version about a year before the '74 "revival" that lasted two weeks on Broadway. Cute and funny, almost because of its crude construction and precious jokes. How badly must the Broadway version have adapted it to do so badly? Perhaps the ticket price difference between a college production and Broadway raised expectations. --------------------------------------------- I've seen both versions. I thought the Alice Faye/Gene Nelson (Abe Burrows) revisal was much, much better. In fact, I liked it slightly more than NANETTE, and considerably more than IRENE. ---------------------------------------------- RA: Patent Leather Shoes: again, a good evening's entertainment. It does seem out of sync with novelist Powers' type of humor. What I read about inauspicious New York opening was that the tone of reviews was not so much that it was a bad show, but that __of course__ it was a bad show, it originated in local regional theatre (Summit, Illinois). It was probably a mistake to open it __on__ Broadway instead of off. --------------------------------------------- It was a smash in Philly. I liked the cast but not the show.
