Winona the musical to open
A musical about the shoplifting trial of Winona Ryder has been written by a
group of drama students at a US high school in San Diego.
Sticky Fingers: A Tale of Saks, Lies and Videotape is a musical satire on
the trial last year in which the Oscar-nominated actress was convicted of
shoplifting.
The Alien Resurrection and Heathers star stole about $3,500 worth of items
from Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills, including socks, hair accessories
and a white Gucci dress.
The students have invited the actress to see the performance, which opens
this week, but have not yet received a reply.
The production is the result of a year's worth of work by students and is
directed by teacher Larry Zeiger, who plays piano for the show and stars as
CNN interviewer Larry King.
Tango dancer
"We're inspired by the old Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland 'Hey, let's put on
a show' kind of spirit," said the literature, film and drama teacher.
The musical follows a missile-factory employee and tango dancer who travels
to Rodeo Drive, in Beverly Hills.
There she has a fateful meeting with her idol, Ryder, at Saks.
The department store has donated shopping bags for the set.
Ryder was punished with 480 hours of community service, which she has now
completed. She also received a £1,640 fine.
Ryder's publicist, Mara Buxbaum, said she did not know if the 31-year-old
actress had seen the invitation.
