Haven't posted lyrics for awhile, so I thought I'd start again.....I was first introduced to this classic Blues piece by the band "Blood, Sweat, and Tears"......Later found out it had been written by Billie Holiday......One day, awhile back, on the local Jazz station (KCSM 91.1) they played both Billie and BS&T in that order......I like'em both......but kinda prefer BS&T's.......Billie was sort of a downer version, while BS&T's is a little more upbeat in the instruments......but has a killer blues harmonica in it........ And Now we present the Blood, Sweat and Tears band.....backed up by the Tower of Power Horn section........The Reverend David Clayton-Thomas steps up to the microphone to present his sermon...... God Bless the Child Billie Holiday Them that's got, shall get Them that's not, shall lose So the Bible says And it still is news Momma may help And Poppa may help But God Bless the Child That's got his own wealth That's has his own And the strong seem to get more While the weak one's fade Empty pockets don't Ever make the grade 'Cause Momma may help And Poppa may help But God Bless the Child That's got his own That's got his own And when you got money You got lot's of friends A'crowdin' 'round your door When the money's gone And all your spendin' ends They won't be 'round anymore No, No, No... And rich relations may give you Crusty bread and such You can help yourself But don't take too much Momma may help And Poppa may help But God Bless the child That's got his own That's got his own (Instrumental with BS&T, Tower of Power Horns.....Very Upbeat......) And when you got money You got lot's of friends They're crowdin' 'round your door But wait a minute chill'run When the money's gone And all your spendin' ends They won't be 'round anymore No, No... And rich relations may give you 'Crusty bread and such You can help yourself But don't take too much Momma may help And Poppa may help But God Bless the Child Who can stand up and say... I got my own... Every child's got to have his own wealth....... -- Breathe deep the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Bedsitter people look back and lament Another day's useless energy spent. Impassioned lovers wrestle as one Lonely man cries for love and has none New mother picks up and suckles her son Senior citizens wish they were young. Cold hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colors from our sight Red is grey and yellow white But we decide which is right. And which is an illusion? Eric in the Evening
