<< When I was a kid (15-20 years ago) I remember hearing a song about a man
and his wife that loved each other and were never apart. In the end of
the song she can't even remember his name.
I would like to buy this song for my parents who love it very much. I'm
not a country music listener and can't come close to finding out who
sings it. Is there anyone in this group that can knows this song?
Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. >>
This sounds as if it could be "Where've You Been" by Kathy Mattea. Your time
frame is a little off but reasonably close...it was on the country charts in
late 1989/early 1990.
The first three verses chronicle a couple's meeting, their marriage, and him
being on the road a lot as a salesman. On each occasion, the wife says "Where
you been?" -- the first two times because she's been looking in vain up to that
point for her soulmate, and the third because he was late getting home one
night and she was worried.
In the last verse, 50 years have gone by and they're both in a nursing home
("in separate rooms on different floors"), and she has succumbed to Alzheimer's
Disease. But when he's wheeled into her room, she does recognize him and sings
the refrain one more time.
It really is a good song -- performed with great understatement, so that what
could have turned corny in the wrong hands is instead very affecting.
I hope this is the one you're looking for.
