Interesting, since my mom's family always used "Xmas" when they were
writing out cards and letters, and they were pretty devout. I generally
don't abbreviate - notable exception is when I post the lyrics to John
Lennon's "Happy Xmas", but that's 'cause it's on the lyric sheet that
way - and I don't abbreviate Christmas, Christian, Christianity, etc.
because I feel that abbreviating it shows a lack of respect. I think
the logic for the "Xmas" is that the "X" is the Greek letter "chi" and
is used to represent the word "Christ" in some cases; the fish with the
Greek letters in it comes to mind.
