In the wake of the 9/11 tradegies, I was told by a friend in Europe that a certain popular American lyric-baritone (whose name I prefer not to repeat), after a concert-performance and during a fundraising party that followed, was called upon to say a few words apropos to the mood and spirit of the moment. He made an brief impromptu speech asking all present to not only pray for the thousands who had been murdered, =96 but the dead terrorists as well. He received enormous applause, and was unanimously praised as a "hero" for this. It may be supposed that he was primarily reflecting his early teachings, e.g., the supposition, "they know not what they do", which he also stated, =96 yet I've no doubt this would have failed to evoke nearly so positive a reaction back here, in the States.
