Yes, if the song makes the singer bawl their eyes out, the congregation is
going to stand there feeling sympathy and/or empathy with the singer rather
than moving to worship as the singer intended. Years ago, there was a song I
wanted my choir to sing that had a line "take the dearest thing to me"
followed by "that's what I'd be willing to do" to draw closer to God. They
couldn't sing it in rehearsal without tearing up, so I knew they'd never be
able to do it during a service. I also got the feeling that part of it was
because they weren't really WILLING to sing a line like that.
You have to believe what you're singing to the point that you're convicted
in advance. It's never a pretty sight when the reality of a lyric hits home
with a singer right in the middle of a performance. They should have thought
about what the song MEANT earlier, while they were rehearsing it. Then
they'd have been prepared to sing it and bless others with the message.
