Well I can't give an artist (because they all record the same P&W songs over
and over again) but I can give song titles.
Every Move I Make by David Ruis
This song doesn't explain itself. It mentions nothing about WHY every move
they make is in Jesus. (Like He died for my sins and rose from the dead.)
This is a very popular song in P&W circles. Christian need to be reminded of
what Jesus did for us too.
We Fall Down by Chris Tomlin
Again the lyrics (think about someone walking into a church) just talk about
one aspect of Christianity. Most churchs are doing fewer and fewer hymns (
Amy even said that she got most of her sermons through the hymns) and
turning to P&W.
I'm taking this a step forward...talking about P&W in church...just to let
you know.
Breathe by Marie Barnett
This is one of those is it about God or a boyfriend songs. Yeah it mentions
Daily Bread but to someone who not a Christian just hearing this song...say
at a friends house or walking into a church for the first time might be left
with questions.
I Could Sing of Your Love Forever by Martin Smith
It never addresses why they will sing of his love. Put yourself in the place
of someone whose not a Christian. They might not know who is being talked
about. God's name nor Jesus' name is ever mention. It's only referred to as
you.
I could go on but to me I've made my point. The only reason I am mentioning
P&W in the church is because I was thinking about those who are just walking
into church never before having heard the gospel...heck even turning on the
radio and hearing those songs. They might have only hear about Jesus through
a song but in church it's rare to hear Jesus' name mentioned in song
anymore. CCM is a whole other thorn in my side when it comes to the watered
down lyrics. I grew up listening to (of course) Amy Grant, 2nd Chapter of
Acts, Imperials and so many more who let you know what they were talking
about. Nowadays you don't know. I think if more Christians thought about it
from a persons postion who not a Christian we might get back to a more
Christ centered lyric. Now don't get me wrong I see nothing wrong with
crossing over to the pop/rap/country/r&b etc etc markets as long as the
intention is made known. The groups (Superchick, Stacie...) I had mentioned
earlier are what's popular in Christian circles and with the lyrics they
have you would never know they were Christian artists. That's what someone
who not a Christian is going to hear from their Christian friends or if they
flip through the radio and listen to it. They won't know they are listening
to a CR station. I see a slight trend in Christ Centered lyrics coming back
and I hope it stays. You are right that someone who's not a Christian most
likely won't listen to CR but they might have friends who are listening to
CCM in their presence...but they might not know it's Christian music.
