FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 29, 2003 SF RENEGADES AND RIVER CITY REGIMENT HOST NEW SHOW "West Coast Showdown" SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The San Francisco Renegades and River City Regiment are proud to present their first dual hosted Drum and Bugle Corps show, "West Coast Showdown," on July 20 at Del Oro High School in North Sacramento at 7 p.m. The audience will be treated to the power and pageantry of some of the finest drum and bugle corps in the west as the Renegades, River City Regiment and SoCal Dream from Buena Park, CA, compete for the California State Championship. They will perform along with Pacific Crest from Diamond Bar, CA, 2000 DCI Division II Champion Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets, Blue Devils "B" and "C" Corps, and the newest corps in California; Modesto Fever. This show will mark the "California Senior Corps Championship" where River City Regiment and SoCal Dream of Buena Park will be gunning for the title of CA Champion and ownership of the Western Cup, currently held by the San Francisco Renegades. Will the Renegades be able to hold onto the Western Cup and the title for another year? Or will we see a new California Senior Corps Champion? Be there to find out!! This will also be the last chance for audiences to see drum corps in California this year. Pacific Crest will travel to the Orange Bowl in Orlando, Florida for their first Drum Corps International "Summer Music Games World Championship" appearance. Their show, "Invocacion a Poderosos" with music from Panambi, by Alberto Ginastera and Allegria by Rene DuPere, conveys the musical images of night on the plains of Latin America; where lightning flashes, angry gods demand appeasement, and the powerful magic of spirits lurk under the protective cloak of darkness. Pacific Crest will also present a clinic before the show - free for all ticket holders. Starting at 3pm, Pacific Crest's instructional staff and members will offer an inside view of how a world class drum and bugle corps rehearses. Students, parents and educators are encouraged to attend. The River City Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps will perform their 2003 production, entitled The Elements, which includes "Water" from Come Home To The Sea by Chip Davis, "Fire" from Danza ritual del fuego by Manuel de Falla, "Earth" from The Vanished Gardens of Córdoba by Ray Lynch, and "Storm" from The Sea Reivers by Sir Granville Bantock. "Being able to compete with other senior corps on the West Coast is a great way for the River City Regiment to raise our performance quality to DCA finalist levels. Local senior corps competitions like the West Coast Showdown provides our membership with ongoing inspiration to become a finalist at the DCA Championships in the next 2 years," says Mike Phillips, River City Regiment President. The Renegades' 2003 production, "Red Skies at Night: Midnight in the Stadium of Good and Evil," is a visual and aural exploration of the coexistence of good and evil. The Renegades will perform "Toccata" by Johann Sebastian Bach, "Halloween Theme," by John Carpenter, "Russian Christmas Music," by Alfred Reed, "Ave Maria," by Franz Biebl, as performed by Chanticleer, "Music from the Matrix," by Don Davis, "Niner-Two," by Don Ellis, "Tears in Heaven," by Eric Clapton and "Bells," by Ian McDougall. "It is exciting to see how far the Western Senior Corps activity has progressed since the Renegades took the field in 1999. The fact that three senior corps will be vying for a Championship at the West Coast Showdown is a testimony to the momentum of the senior corps movement in California," said Chris Nalls, Director of the Renegades. SoCal Dream Drum & Bugle Corps will be traveling from Buena Park, California to perform as the newest senior corps on the field, having debuted in 2002 with a standstill performance. This year they compete in the senior corps circuit with a full-fledged field production, "Los Sueños Calientes," featuring music from The Mambo Kings, including "Mambo Caliente," percussion feature "Groove in 4X4X4," "Malaga," "Beautiful Maria of My Soul," and closing with a reprise of "Mambo Caliente."
