Here are some suggestions -
Hindusthani (North Indian) Classical Music
-------------------------------------------
"'An Introduction to Indian Music" by B. Chaitanya Deva
"The Music of India - A scientific Study" by B. Chaitanya Deva
"Music in India: The Classical Traditions" by Bonnie C. Wade
"Indian Classical Music - an invitation" by Raghava R. Menon
"Theory of Indian Ragas' by Ram Avatar 'Vir'. An elementary book.
"Hindusthani Music" by Ashok Ranade
Carnatic (South Indian) Classical Music
----------------------------------------
"South Indian Music" - 6 volumes, by Prof. P. Sambamurthy. Recommended.
Volumes 1 & 2 introductory.
"The art and science of Carnatic Music" by Vidya Shankar
"Listening to Carnatic Music" by B R C Iyengar
Covering both Hindusthani and Carnatic music
-----------------------------------------------
"All you wanted to know about Indian Music (Carnatic and Hindusthani) but
didn't know whom to ask" by Dr. S. Narasimhan. Despite the title, it is a
useful elementary book.
"Raganidhi" - 4 volumes - by B. Subba Rao. Brief descriptions on over a
hundred ragas in the two systems, alphabetically ordered. For the more
advanced student.
