I recommend Ralph (pronounced Rafe) Vaughan Williams, a composer from the early part of the 20th century. Especially lovely is his piece entitled "The Lark Ascending." Absolutely beautiful and wonderful. I really can't hear it often enough. Vaughan Williams is who brought me to classical music in the first place, and I love almost everything of his that I hear. Where classical music is concerned, you really should just give everything a try. You really can't hear enough of it, and I'm often saddened by the fact that there are probably many beautiful pieces that I'll never even get to. A lot depends on your taste, but I've found that there are pieces from just about every musical period that appeal to me, even a select few of the modern composers. I even like opera now. One other note: after my ears were opened by Vaughan Williams, I began to really appreciate public radio and commercial-free broadcasts of classical music. It's very important to support your local station. Without it we'd perhaps never get to hear so many of these marvelous works. If you've priced classical music CDs online, you'll know why. Some of the recordings are obscure and hard to come by as well, but thanks to public radio, they're played for all to hear and enjoy. So listen to Vaughan Williams and all of the classical composers. There is something to appeal to everyone. And most important, support your local public radio station to let them know how much you appreciate their broadcast of these artistic treasures. phloxy
