The National Constitution Center opens in Philadelphia and honors
Atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair as one of the 100 members of our
country's "National Family Tree."  Mrs. O'Hair was a plaintiff in the
combined Supreme Court suit (MURRAY v. CURLETT/ABINGTON TOWNSHIP v.
SCHEMPP) that helped to end mandatory prayer and Bible verse
recitation in our public schools. Margaret Downey of the Freethought
Society of Greater Philadelphia speaks to the dedication guests and
the nation, defending freedom from religion and declaring, "I am a
proud Atheist and I love this country." (7-4-03)
