He's a fine songwriter with a knack for indelible vocal melodies and wry
updates and ironic turns on the lyric conventions/cliches of country
music. Strong tenor voice, pretty good guitar player. The band he fronts,
Old 97s, is one of the tighest, most energetic bands I've ever seen. His
recent solo album didn't sound categorically different from his Old 97s
material; it left me a little baffled: given that he works with a
world-class rhythm section, why not have 'em play on the album/tour?
