Don't get all excited. Ian just didn't happen to read your post.
I made no claims about my Beatles knowledge -- that was Crazy
Chuckles, but just to keep you happy:
>> 1. Name the well-known musician who designed an early
>> Beatles guitar. Name the musician plus the make & model
>> of the guitar in question.
Chet Atkins. The Gibson Country Gent. George got two of them I think.
>> 2. Who played lead guitar on Another Girl? (cite source)
Macca. Lewisohn. He used basically the same licks on another song
shortly afterwards.
>> 3. Name the only song written by Lennon & Harrison.
The only song *copyrighted* to Lennon and Harrison is "Cry For A
Shadow". There are two other songs that just about qualify as joint
compositions.
>> 4. Why was the song in Question # 3 given its title?
Because the Beatles despised Cliff Richards and the Shadows were his
backing group. There was probably a bit of envy in that.
There's another Beatle song which shares this "Hey Good Looking"
model.
>> 5. What song is No Reply patterned after?
I think it was Harrison who pointed to the doo wop "Silhouettes" as a
lyric model.
>> 6. Which of the Beatles is known for odd meters?
Lennon, however he wasn't the first to use them in the band.
>> 7. What make & model electric guitar did George use to
>> record most of the cuts on Beatles 65? (cite source)
BEATLES 65 is a U.S.-Capital concoction of songs the Beatles recorded
in 1964, mostly for BEATLES FOR SALE. He uses both his Country Gent
and Tennessean a lot. Source is Everett.
"No Reply" - almost nothing
"I'm A Loser" - Tennessean
"Baby's In Black" - Tennessean
"Rock And Roll Music" - Jumbo
"I'll Follow The Sun" - Country Gent
"Mr Moonlight" - Country Gent overdub
"Honey Don't" - Tennessean
"I'll Be Back" - Ramirez and Jumbo
"She's A Woman" - Country Gent
"I Feel Fine" - Country Gent
"Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby" - Country Gent
Other tracks from the period include:
"I Don't Want To Spoil The Party" - Tennessean solo
"Words Of Love" - Tennessean
"Kansas City" - Country Gent
"Eight Days A Week" - Country Gent
"What Your Doing" has two 12-string ricky parts.
>> 8. What make & model guitar was used to play the solo
>> in Nowhere Man? (cite source)
That should read "guitars" -- the solo is played by Harrison and
Lennon in unison, both playing strats. Source is Tom Hartman who asked
Harrison in 1968/1969.
>> 9. What popular guitarist helped Paul learn blues
>> licks and blues history? (cite source)
Did I see Macca talk about some Brit once? I don't recall.
>> 10. What were Paul's original lyrics to Yesterday?
>> (cite source)
Lord, who doesn't know "Scrambled Eggs". Alma Cogan's daughter claims
that she'd just made some scrambled eggs as Paul struggled to find
lyrics for the tune. The legs were supposed to have been inspired by
her famous mum. The book YESTERDAY AND TODAY goes into some detail on
the topic.
>> 11. What was the make & model guitar used by George to
>> play his part in Til There was You? (cite source)
On stage he used a Gretsch. He uses a Jose Ramirez on the recording.
Sources are Walt Everett and probably BEATLES GEAR.
>> 12. What was the make & model guitar used by George to
>> play his part in I've Just Seen a Face? (cite source)
He plays a 12-string acoustic. I think Everett says it was John's
Framus. John played some acoustic guitar and Paul played a nylon
string. There's a couple of bum notes in the intro.
>> 13. Who plays the lead guitar break (solo) in Day Tripper?
>> (cite source)
Lennon claims the whole song, lick, break etc. Multiple sources, but
probably originally from LENNON REMEMBERS or the 1980 Playboy
interview. Lennon plays similar stuff in the fast version of
"Revolution".
>> 14. What guitarist inspired John to buy his first
>> Rickenbacker? (cite source)
Harrison thinks John had seen the cover of a Toots Thielemans album (a
jazz guitarist). I think that story was in BEATLES GEAR. However, it
was also largely accidental that the store happened to have a 325.
Whole websites are dedicated to the history of this instrument.
>> 15. What lyric by what famous singer inspired John to
>> think of the song title to Please Please Me?
>> (cite a source)
"Please" as sung by Bing Crosby. Lennon was also inspired by "Only The
Lonely" by Roy Orbison. Lennon later cited the two songwriters with
regard to another song. Common knowledge -- probably in Lewisohn or
Everett.
Lennon loved using "please" as the key word. I guess it was him who
inserted it into "Love Me Do" and he has "please, please help me" as
the climax of "Help!".
>> 16. What famous artist inspired John to write You've
>> Got to Hide Your Love Away? (cite a source)
Lennon says it was in his Dylan period. Probably in LENNON REMEMBERS.
There have been some crazy theories about this song.
>> 17. Name the country music recording artist and the
>> name of the album, by same artist, that George
>> Harrison wrote liner notes for back in the mid-Sixties.
Chet Atkins. CHET ATKINS PICKS THE BEATLES. Harrison also wrote cover
notes for another artist a little later.
