Pleasants Room, Wilson Library, UNC-Chapel Hill
On April 5, 2003 the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will host a
symposium
entitled Hillbilly Sources and Symbols: Country Music, Cultural Brokerage
and O
Brother, Where Art Thou? The symposium has been organized to celebrate the
publication of Country Music Sources: A Biblio-Discography of Commercially
Recorded
Traditional Music by Guthrie Meade, Dick Spottswood and Douglas Meade.
Distinguished speakers and panelists will explore the resurgence of interest
in traditional
music and its representation through popular culture. Benjamine Filene,
author of
Romancing the Folk: Public Memory & American Roots Music (University of
North
Carolina Press, 2000) will be the symposium’s keynote speaker.
Panelists will include:
Robert Cantwell (UNC-CH Professor, American Studies and the author of When
We
Were Good, Ethnomimesis: Folklife and the Representation of Culture and
Bluegrass
Breakdown: The Making of the Old Southern Sound)
Bill Ferris (Associate Director, Center for the Study of the American South,
author,
folklorist, and filmmaker)
Archie Green (Folklorist and author of Torching the Fink Books & Other
Essays on
Vernacular Culture and Only a Miner: Studies in Recorded Coal-Mining Songs)
Alan Jabbour (Former Head of the Archive of American Folk Culture, Library
of
Congress)
David Sanjek (Director of the Broadcast Music Incorporated Archives)
Dick Spottswood (Archivist, producer, radio host, and co-author of Country
Music
Sources: A Biblio-Discography of Commercially Recorded Traditional Music)
