Mike Corbett, responding to me: For the sake of the discussion, if Leather is a girl and wears a big sign saying "I can Ballroom Dance" she has a reasonable chance of being asked to dance by one or two boys who know some ballroom dancing, if she's in a very large school dance. "reasonable chance of being asked" sounds just like what I said; without the sign, the boys asking will still know some ballroom dancing, which was the original question. To get them to use that ballroom knowledge with her may require that she let them know that they can, as you point out later, but even if they don't use that knowledge, they still have it. That said, I agree that instruction is less important if Leather is female, as she can just trust the boys to lead. On the flip side, if Leather is male, instruction may well be useful even with girls who don't know ballroom; if he's taught a little about leading, many of the girls will be able to follow, even without training. I'm not sure what religion has to do with it. I've seen no evidence that Mormons outside of Utah are more likely to know ballroom than gentiles outside of Utah, and for that matter the same goes for the two groups within Utah as well. Were you to assume you could go bar hopping in So. Cal. and expect to see WCS, you would be just as wrong. Don't worry, I'm not under any illusion that anywhere near half a percent of the state population would show up to a WCS competition in California. For that matter, I agree with you that WCS is for old fogies, not teenagers. Warren J. Dew Powderhouse Software
