Come try something new - barn dance, a dance style imported from the UK, where hundreds of people turn out for an evening's good sweaty fun. We've got an interesting band this month, good musicians in a cool new combination with a few instruments you don't hear much at dances: Dick Bagwell on saxophone, flute and whistle; Erin Vang on French horn, pocket trumpet and tuba; and Rob Powell and Noel Cragg on accordion and piano, with a rumour of electric bass and trumpet from Rob. Barn dance is, basically, a dance party with uncomplicated, vigorous, joyful pub-or-barn dance styles. You might walk, you might skip, or even learn a very simple dance step. All dances are taught and called to live music. No partner or previous dance experience is necessary -- in the UK, these dances might be done in a pub as well as a dance hall, so the dances are simple and cheerful. Dress is casual, mood is light-hearted. Each month there's likely to be a guest music or dance performance to round things out. These dances are held every first Sunday evening in Berkeley. June 1st, 7-9:45 p.m. Caller: Jonathan Coxhead Music: Dick Bagwell, Erin Vang, Rob Powell, and Noel Cragg Special guest dance performance by the display dance team Mayfield Morris & Sword Grace North Church 2138 Cedar St. (near Oxford), Berkeley Admission: Adults $10, BACDS members $8, kids $5 For more information visit either http://www.liveavatar.com/ceilidh/ or http://www.bacds.org/berkeleyceilidh, or call 650-365-2913
