New Zealand's dance music scene has lost one of its brightest young talents.
Tim Eng, who died of cancer last week, was a world-class performer in a
field so new that few people really understood it.
He was a VJ, the visual equivalent of a music DJ, the familiar initials
originally derived from disc jockey.
His work created magic for thousands of party-goers - from the high- powered
revellers at the Louis Vuitton Ball to the teen masses at the Big Day Out
and the dance music faithful at events like The Gathering and Splore.
It sounds trite to talk about visual symphonies but that is quite
specifically what he created. His technical skills in computer programming
allowed him to create mind-bending 3D graphics which he could mix and
transform live on stage to match the rhythm and mood of the music.
Under the stage name of VJ Finny he worked with international stars such as
Basement Jaxx, Carl Cox, Goldie and Paul Van Dyke.
He helped create the look and feel at most of New Zealand's biggest dance
music events over the past eight years.
Tim was born in Christchurch but developed his skills in computer graphics
after moving to Singapore as a teenager.
He later moved to Finland where he established himself as key member of the
local club scene there.
It was also in Finland where he met wife Minna, with whom he had lived in
Auckland for the past two years.
Tim's artistic legacy will live on in software he created to help others
working in his field.
It will also live on in the memories of all those who experienced the magic
of his live events.
