video copyrightHi, I'm forwarding this to the MLA-L list as I'm sure this issue is of concern to many of us who have Performing Arts collections, or even just a few dance videos in our music collections. Kathleen Haefliger -- Liaison to the Dance Librarians -----Original Message----- From: DLDG-L Dance Librarians Discussion Group [mailto:email-address-deleted]On Behalf Of Pamela Harris Sent: Friday, May 09, 2003 3:56 PM To: email-address-deleted Subject: video copyright RE: Concerns surrounding Dance Videos, Copyright, & Preservation in small institutions Swarthmore College is an undergraduate institution with approximately 1400 students. We have a Dance Department that offers a dance major and a library collection to support undergraduate research. Our dance collection has a large video collection, 50% of which is college sponsored and produced performances, 50% of which is commercially purchased VHS/DVD. I am looking for similar undergraduate institutions who share the same concerns for their video collection, ie. preservation and copyright. Do any of you have collection/video development policies that address preservation and copyright needs? We are at the point of considering a retrospective conversion of high priority/high use VHS titles to DVD. Are any of you considering this? We also are concerned about the degradation of our collection when older VHS titles deteriorate and are not available for purchase (are unique or 'out of print'). Can we make DVD copies of commercially owned VHS materials for archival purposes? Larger institutions will have larger departments and budgets to handle these kinds of issues, however colleges must be more conservative and creative with their limited resources. I would like to hear from anyone who is interested in these issues. Please respond directly to me and I can post for the list. I am especially interested to hear from you if you have these concerns but have not addressed them formally yet!! ************************************************************************* To leave MLA-L, send the command SIGNOFF MLA-L to email-address-deleted or send an e-mail message to email-address-deleted.
