As I'm sure I've mentioned before, the Utah Lindy Exchange is a small group, trying to build annually, just like any dance convention. This years promoter, Nate, was handed the baton from prior promoters and given little, if any, instruction. It has NOT been a 'for profit' enterprise, thus far, since the most participation was a little over 100. Therefore, they had to make due with whatever venues cost the least amount of money. Friday, the Lindy swing activities took place in the University of Utah Ballroom, and from midnight to 4 am, they were at Dance Sport in Motion a medium sized studio in a strip mall, surrounded by commercial property, and with no residential areas within earshot. Saturday night they met at Murray Arts Center, an already established dance venue with ballroom dancers filling their 12,000 sq ft floor on the North side of the street and the Swing dancers occupying the 6,000 sq ft floor on the south side of the street. At midnight, again they retired to DanceSport In Motion to repeat their dance activities of the night before. They were not in a Hotel ballroom because they aren't large enough yet to finance such a venture. On Saturday night, they again attracted a little over 100 dancers from at least 6 states including Utah to the MAC, but after midnight, about 50-60 followed them to DanceSport. Bill Morse, Nate's defense attorney pled him Not Guilty and is waiting for a pre-trail date. In the meantime, he is researching the constitutionality of this dance ordinance. Rocky Anderson, the Mayor of Salt Lake City challenged the City Council to get rid of this dance ordinance long before the Olympics hit Salt Lake City with no success. It will be interesting to get his take on this first hand. I have printed out many of the dance flyers I have found on line that list within the schedule portion of the flyer "Dance till you drop" after midnight or other similar language that indicates that at dance conventions we do dance long after midnight. If you have other things to offer, you may mail them to me: Pam Genovesi P O BOX 26422, SLC, Ut 84126 e-mail email-address-deleted I have been forwarding all information to Bill Morse, one of the leaders in this dance community and Nate's Defense Attorney.
