Mystery 'mountain' dance identified

A few months ago I asked for the identity of a dance I watched and danced
in a small mountain town. It went something like (leader) step left...right
together...right...left together...right. Nobody seemed to know the dance,
but there was a lot of speculation about it.
Tonight we went back to the place, the Allegheny Jubilee in Sparta, North
Carolina. I asked the proprietor for the name of the dance. He quickly
answered that it was the "Two-Step." I said I was familiar with the Texas
Two-Step, CW2s, etc. He said it was the plain old "Hillbilly Two-Step" and
had been danced in mountain country for several generations.
It's danced as SQQS. The second slow is either a step in place or a step
backward---not a step down the line of dance.
As we were counting out the steps, someone came over and said the dance is
the forerunner of T2S. Sure enough, if the second slow is motion down the
LOD, one is dancing modern CW2S.
