This Friday, March 7, join Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums (featuring Miss Carmen Gettit), The Johnny Nocturne Band (featuring Mz. Dee), and The Mood Swing Orchestra for a swinging fundraiser dance at Ashkenaz. Ashkenaz, a nonprofit music and dance center in Berkeley, California, depends on grants and gifts as well as income from dances and classes to stay open. For over 30 years, Ashkenaz has been committed to supporting live music music from many different genres even if it doesn't bring in a lot of money. With the faltering economy, income from grants and club attendance has been down. To raise money, Ashkenaz is sponsoring an Ashkenaz Music and Dance Festival month, with many great shows that represent the diversity of bands and music, from all over the world, that play on a regular basis at Ashkenaz. This Friday, Nick Lawrence and Shanna Paulazzo teach a beginning East Coast Swing lesson at 8 pm, followed by general dancing at 9 pm, with live music by the featured bands. The bands play a variety of tempos suitable for ECS, Lindy, and WCS dancing. All ages are welcome. Admission is $15 (of course they will gladly accept additional donations - large or small). Food and drinks are available for an additional charge. LOCATION: Ashkenaz, 1317 San Pablo Avenue, Berkeley, CA (at the intersection of San Pablo and Gilman). DRIVING DIRECTIONS: Take I-80 to Berkeley. In Berkeley, take the Gilman Street exit and proceed east on Gilman approximately one mile to San Pablo Avenue. Parking is available along San Pablo Avenue and (after 9 pm) in the REI/Walgreens lot across the street from Ashkenaz. COMING TO ASHKENAZ: * Friday, March 7 - Swing to Benefit Ashkenaz with Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums, The Johnny Nocturne Band with Mz Dee, and the Mood Swing Orchestra * Wednesday, March 12 - The Steve Lucky Quartet featuring Miss Carmen Gettit (WCS) For more information about swing dances and lessons at Ashkenaz, visit Nick Lawrence's web site: http://www.SwingIsTheThing.com. For a complete schedule of Ashkenaz events, including other types of dancing, visit http://www.ashkenaz.com. Standard disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with Ashkenaz or Nick Lawrence. I am posting this announcement to help support one of the few opportunities in the SF Bay Area to swing dance to live music. I have been attending Nick's dances for many years and always enjoy them.
