Trance has de-volved into what you describe. Recent incarnations, it seems,
are very formulaic and pop-oriented. The edgy stuff is not getting airplay
in the US (that I know of).

Trance really took off in the early-to-mid '90's; and hit its peak in Europe
in the late '90's. There are hundreds of great tracks.
My all-time favorite trance compilation is "Trance Europe Express - Volume
2" released in 1994. Here's a track list:

The Trance Europe Express series was very high quality, in general,
featuring a broad spectrum of artists and styles within the genre. Some
might argue that these compilations weren't strictly trance, and I would
agree with that.
Here's a complete listing of the TEEX (and related) trance compilations:

I wish I knew the differences between all of the myriad sub-genres of techno
music. Here's a rough definition of "techno":
techno - Music that sounds like technology.
Trance involves repetitive patterns that "induce a trance" in the listener.
The term "trance" has also become associated with a high-energy type of
anthemic dance music that used to fall under the category "rave music".
Within "trance" I'm sure there are a dozen sub-genres. I can't keep track
of them all, nor do I care to.
