I tried to come up with a list of songs about southern gospel music (rather
than about the gospel message) and it is pretty short even including songs
by secular artists. I'll list the songs and maybe you can add some.
"Go Out to the Program" -- song the Oaks did years ago in which they
encouraged people to attend Gospel concerts and impersonated top SGM groups
of the day. They got the song from Black Gospel. I have a version by the
Dixie Hummingbirds who impersonate top black groups.
"That's JD" -- Tribute to JD Sumner by the Sons of Songs (not the famous old
group) but a trio based in Michigan.
"The Dooright Family" -- A novelty song by Ray Stevens about an SGM family
group. The bass explodes at the end by hitting too low a note. It was on
his Streaker album.
"The Blackwood Brothers by the Statler Brothers" -- Great tribute song
written by lead Don Reid of the Statlers. I love his line about "their
autographs were the only thing free but the main thing they were selling was
Jesus and good singing"
Statlers' "All-Girl, All Gospel Quartet" -- another Don Reid song but I
assume this is fictional. He loved this quartet ("Bonnie played bass and
sold records") but they broke up ("Little Louise went bad") and the only
place you can find their records are at flea markets and in discount store
basements.
"Southern Style" -- song from early 90s by Palmetto State praising Southern
Gospel Music. It was written by pianist Woody Beatty and says Gabriel might
play his trumpet southern style.
Good Old Gospel Music -- Joel Hemphill song that the Kingsmen recorded.
Recording starts with Jim Hamill searching the radio dial for a station that
plays SGM.
