Lennon said that Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel" was the song that started his love
of rock. When he heard that song, it was like a whole new world opened up
for him.
It seems clear that John was a fan of rockabilly. Among other things: (1)
"Please Please Me" was originally intended to be a Roy Orbison style song;
(2) The Beatles recorded several of Carl Perkins's songs; (3) the end of "The
Ballad of John and Yoko" is taken from Johnny Burnette's "Lonesome Tears in
My Eyes"; and (4) he loved Gene Vincent's "Be-Bop-A-Lula".
He also liked soul music, judging from the number of soul songs the Beatles
performed in their early days with John on lead vocals, and the soul
influences in some of his early songs ("All I've Got to Do", "This Boy", "Not
a Second Time").
He was aware of ska music, judging from the ska breaks in "I Call Your Name"
and the Anthology version of "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number"),
The Byrds' song "Eight Miles High" probably helped him develop ideas for
psychedelic music.
He mentioned the Incredible String Band in one of the Beatles Christmas
messages, and there is a picture of him with a poster from Captain
Beefheart's LP "Safe as Milk."
