I was just down in my "cave" ruminating of that very subject.....Weiss and tablature that is. Herein are Lutester's rules for the enjoyment of life in a mixed (lute-guitar) society: If you are going to play 6 or 7 ch renaissance lute (and vihuela) music on the guitar you should adopt the tuning of the lute and play from the tablature. Why? Because 1) it is much easier than dealing with someone else's transcriptions and 2) one day you might wish to actually play a renaissance lute and you will be able to do so. If, on the other hand, you are going to play 11 or 13 ch baroque lute music on the guitar you should find a "good" transcription and not be afraid of altering the inevitable craziness in fingering and voicing that usually accompanies such a transcription. That minor chord tuning makes faithful (read faithful) renditions on the standard guitar problematic. A couple of cases in point. At http://www.tabulatura.de/Pdffiles/BGII_13_Prelude.pdf you'll find a transcription of the famous dmin prelude by Weiss from baroque lute tablature to guitar tablature. If you've ever heard it on the lute, you'll see that the guitar transcription is nowhere near a faithful rendition of the original. On the other hand there is a really nice transcription of Lauffensteiner's "Menuette" at: http://www.tabulatura.de/Pdffiles/BGII_11_Menuett.pdf. This one would make a nice piece for anyone interested in playing some of the baroque literature on the guitar. It does take some monkeying around though. Actually the whole bunch of pieces at http://www.tabulatura.de/guitartabm.html would be good practice for guitarists interested in trying their hand at reading guitar tablature versions of baroque lute pieces.....there are a few baroque guitar pieces in there also. Take a look and enjoy! Some may work for you. Robert Crim ..........there are midis too, but the tempos are off
