Not a chance. There will always be Nick Currans, Alvin Youngblood Harts and
Bonnie Raits reminding the world of one of the greatest treasures America
has to offer (the blues).

Subject: New Deal Blues
CB91 has been lamenting the fact that blues will die
when the old black dudes go. Well I saw some old and
new blues this past weekend and what I saw was the
blues evolving into something else. Sat night was the
night of the old timers. Started out checking Willie
Kent out at Harlem Ave Lounge in Berwyn. Willie's got
his young gun Guy King keeping the old blues alive. I
like Willie's band and Guy is good but they did nothing
I had not seen before. Left after Eddie Shaw hit the
stage to sing at the beginning of the second set. Ran
over to Fitzgerald's on the other side of Berwyn to see
Sleepy La Beef. Curious to see Sleepy after bypass
surgery. Sleepy’s guitar playing and voice was strong,
too band his band sucked. Walked in and some doofus
was singing Skynryd, Allmans and Marshall Tucker
covers. Sleepy then came out and the doofus went
behind the drum kit. He was a worse drummer and the
bass player had no clue. Sleepy did his usual jukebox
of country and rock’n’roll oldies w/a Chuck Berry
medley and a blues that morphed into “Stormy Monday.”
Too bad about the band. Should have gone to see the
Dictators.
I wake up Sunday morning thinking the old guys should
retire and let the blues go. It was up to the
Legendary Shack Shakers to renew my faith in the blues. For a band from Nashville, they’ve got a lot of blues
in ‘em. Now mind you, they are not NOT a blues band.
The blues has influenced lunatics like Col JD Wilkes
and JoeBuck. JD blows a mean harp and there were
shades of the Butterfield Blues band (on crack) and
they even closed the show w/”Shake Your Hips.”
Furthermore, Bobby Bare Jr opened the show. In Bare
Jr’s band is Chris Masterson who you Texans probably
know. He wasn’t playing the blues w/Bare Jr or when I
saw him w/Wayne the Train but I’ve been told he played
‘em w/Gray Primich. I needed to clear my head and just
blow it out w/some psychobilly blues boogie. Now I’m
ready for the blues fest this weekend. Have fun y’all.
