It partly states "Recordings of Jazz did not begin until 1917,..." D'z anyone know when the 1st recorded ANYTHING was? Wasn't it Edison's own voice? mike -----Original Message----- From: Blues Music List [mailto:email-address-deleted]On Behalf Of JohnnBlues Sent: Thursday, June 05, 2003 7:33 PM To: email-address-deleted Subject: Re: Blues older than jazz? This is a link to a very good article about the origins of jazz, and it talks a little bit about the blues along the way. I think the influence of ragtime should be noted, and ragtime was informed by the "light classical" music that was popular before it. It's very difficult to pull apart the strands of this music and say what influenced what. Blues influenced jazz more than the other way around, but mostly the two musics travelled different paths. The early rural blues are a fascinating development in themselves, and I think are traceable directly to West African musical traditions that found their expression in the culture of post-slave times. Anyway, this is a very good article on a very good website, which was originally posted here by Ann Rabson. http://www.redhotjazz.com/originsarticle.html ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gregory Johnson" <email-address-deleted> To: <email-address-deleted> Sent: Thursday, June 05, 2003 6:52 PM Subject: Re: Blues older than jazz? > > Jelly Roll Morton was playing blues on piano in New Orleans before WC > > Handy first heard the music in 1903 in the Delta.
