Indeed Mr. Cohn does has an impressive resume but, what (exactly) does the "advisory board" do? mike -----Original Message----- From: Blues Music List [mailto:email-address-deleted]On Behalf Of c.n. His involvement gives it more crediblity than your scepticism takes away from it (imo). Here's a little info from a tribute eric leblanc did on him a few years back on blues-l: Blues Scholar, author & ROOTS N' BLUES series producer LAWRENCE COHN was born on this day in 1932. His 1993 book NOTHING BUT THE BLUES : THE MUSIC AND THE MUSICIANS (Abbeville Press, 1993) is one of the best books ever written on the blues. I first became aware of him through his early albums notes for BLUESVILLE/PRESTIGE (Rev. Gary Davis, K. C. Douglas), ELEKTRA (Leadbelly Library of Congress set), BIOGRAPH (Blind Lemon Jefferson, Ma Rainey), PIEDMONT (Mississippi John Hurt) & BELZONA/YAZOO (Blind Willie McTell). He also wrote some of the first articles on Son House & Mississippi John Hurt, published in Saturday Review, Sing Out!, Sounds & Fury and Down Beat in the early 60s. He also was head of PLAYBOY Records, releasing (in 1972) Leadbelly's June 1949 University of Texas, his last concert. In the late 60s, he was also A&R Chief for EPIC Records, signing Johnny & Shuggie Otis. Of all the great reissues in the ROOTS N' BLUES series, I consider LEGACY 47911 : ROOTS N' BLUES - RETROSPECTIVE 1925-1950 (4CD) the best of lot. The 4CD set belongs in everyone's CD collection. The set was dedicated to one of his mentors, Harry Smith - "folklorist, filmaker, anthropologist & visionary". Harry Smith's 1953 Anthology of American Folk Music (Folkway Records) is were it all began for most of us. I heard my first Mississippi John Hurt on this anthology. (SMITHSONIAN / FOLKWAYS is planning to reissue this anthology as a box set). Harry Smith was born in 1923, Portland, OR., and died on November 27, 1991, NEW YORK CITY, NY. LAWRENCE COHN is one of the leading blues authorities & the fact that he works at SONY/CBS guarantees us that the ROOTS N' BLUES series is compiled with knowledge, love & care. The new 24K gold CD LEGACY 52944 : ROBERT JOHNSON - KING OF THE DELTA BLUES SINGERS is now making available Robert Johnson's first album, taken for the first time from the long lost original 78 acetates! The sound difference is quite something & I suggest all serious Robert Johnson fans give this CD a listen. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LARRY COHN! And thank you for all you've done to promote blues in America.
