I realize this is slightly off topic, but since so many musicians and educators read this news group, North Fort Myers High School in southwest Florida asked me to post an announcement about their jazz festival here. They will be hosting their first ever jazz festival on Saturday, April 12th. Awards will be given for best section in each high school and middle school jazz ensemble, for outstanding soloists, and for the top 3 high school bands of the day. Other bands will not be ranked, but will be rated as Distinguished, Superior, Excellent, Good, or Fair. A private, post-performance clinic will be given to each performing band by one of the clinicians at the festival. The festival is sanctioned by IAJE, and an IAJE scholarship will given to the outstanding high school soloist of the day, as selected by the judging panel. The performing guest ensemble will be the University of Central Florida Jazz Ensemble. Mailings to Florida schools are going out this week, and there is a discount for early registration. Entrants are accepted on a first come-first served basis until all time slots are filled, and they are accepted from anywhere in the country - so if your band wants a trip to southwest Florida, North Fort Myers would be glad to have you participate. For more information, contact Phil Porter, Director of the North Fort Myers Bands, at 239-997-0086 or send an e-mail to Mr. Porter at email-address-deleted
