Pickup on Larry Koonse's Borys

One of the many reasons I bought a Borys B120 was because I liked the sound Larry Koonse got on his LA Jazz Quartet CD. However, I haven't been able to get that sound, and today, as I attempted to clean my apartment, I think I found out why. On the LA Jazz Quartet CD booklet, which I haven't been able to find, I noticed Koonse has a Black neck pickup with 2 sets of screws (maybe it's 2 pickups?) The Borys I bought has a Seymour Duncan/Seth Lover humbucker on it. Which pickup is that black one, and what's the difference between that and the humbucker? Gerry or Steve- you have any idea? It's been a little frustrating using the Borys on my steady, weekly big band gig. I just used my Fender Squire to test out my repaired amp with it, and I was happier with the Squire than the Borys, both soundwise and playingwise. This probably has to do with the TI 12s, which I'm getting used to, but still lack the sound and the easier playability of the 011s or 010s I'm used to. BTW, the big band I've been playing with for about a year and a half, just got invited to play at the HIP Jazz Festival in NY (formerly the JVC Jazz Festival), so I've got to sound good, for a change.
