His point was that, apart from what maybe "should" happen: The reality is, artists *do* carry genre labels. Your personal characterization of George Benson notwithstanding: When people look for his music, they walk to the jazz section. I will grant you that when some people think "jazz," they don't necessarily think "George Benson"; but I would absolutely argue that when 99% of people think "George Benson," they think "jazz."* As for smooth jazz being an "offshoot of fusion": If Sum1 argued that point, I must have skipped the post. I usually skip ahead when I spot the words, "smooth jazz." I'm not interested. And even if I had read the post, I probably wouldn't comment. I don't listen to smooth jazz, so I'm not qualified to discuss its relationship to fusion. (However, I am qualified to say: When people look for CDs by smooth jazz artists, they look in the jazz section.) crib * Obviously, I'm talking about 99% of the people who "think of" George Benson in the first place. 99% of the entire population don't know George Benson -- or most other jazz artists, for that matter.
