I have several thoughts around this. Because I think, some of the hardest part of the golf swing is to make a good back swing. But here's one that corresponds to the x-factor: If you swing outside - in on the back swing you will do the same on the down swing. If you swing inside out with a late "release" (setting the club) on the back swing you will swing inside out with a late release on the down swing. In practice, it is quite similar to right foot left foot swing axis back and down.
