no sound from music cd

I just installed a CD burner and set it to the default drive to play music
CDs. It is master and my other CD drive is the slave. I have a known good
audio cable from CD burner to sound card. My sound card (AWE64) has only a
single input for CD sound.
When I play a music CD using win CD player or winamp, the app runs ok, but I
get no sound from speakers. I do get sound when I play non-music on CDs,
like wavs and midis on a CD.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the MS media control driver, but the
problem still exists. I have swapped the audio cable back to the CD
(non-burner) drive, and I do get sound from music CD.
Any ideas ?
