How to "market" my MIDI music?

MIDI Enthusiasts, I am a composer of original MIDI music. I would like to make my music available to the public on CD. However, I do not wish to sell my CD, because I don't want to make a business out of it. I am aware that there's not a large listener base for instrumental music, but I would like to give away copies of my music CD (free) to individuals upon request. Could I put myself at risk for anything in the long term? Am I still leaving myself open to copyright laws? How likely is it for one of my recipients to say to me one day, "Hey, this track sounds like something I've heard before..." I figure, this is a free country. I write music and I should be able to give samples away as I please. But you never can be too careful, right? Any useful information or advice is needed. Thank you! - Dave
