Every so often I get fed up of listening to the same old bands, and actively hunt out something new and interesting to satisfy my lugs. Thought I'd share my latest discovery ... a Hungarian band called "Omega" who've been on the go since the sixties and have produced a plethora of music, which is interesting and well-executed. They're labelled as "prog-rock", but lean more towards the Deep Purple side of things with broad brush-strokes of Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd and the odd Rush moment. Musicianship is excellent, songs are solid and melodies well crafted. Their drummer is superb and the sound production, particularly on the live albums, is excellent. Omega have been playing huge stadiums in Hungary for many years now - Scorpions vox Klaus Meine even turns up on the 1994 live album to whistle a bit through *that* song. Worth checking out if, like me, you like to try some new music now and then. Be warned that the lyrics are sung in Hungarian, although this isn't a problem, honest! Songs to look out for as a good introduction include Lena, Addig Elj, A Madar and Gyongyhaju Lany. Petroleum Lampa is good for a laugh, too. I believe English language versions are available, but haven't found any yet ... Much Omega stuff can be found in legal mp3 format at www.mediaservices.ru if anyone wants to check it out ... Angus
