Philosopher Steve Jackson says:<<THERE WAS NO GOLDEN AGE OF HIP-HOP! F*ck what the so-called experts, opinion leaders, and revisionist historians say. If you believe hip-hop is a culture or subculture or just music to listen to, how can you declare a golden age when the music/artform/culture is only 30 years old (approximatley). Rock started in the 50s, in 1980 were they referring to 1960 as the Golden Age of Rock???? (if anything, it'd be late 60s or early 70s) History repeats itself constantly and we've (the ones who keep hip-hop culture and music going) been talking this hip-hop is dead thing since at least 1995. And I'm sure even before that. I agree with AttL. Hip-hop ain't going anywhere and guess the f**k what? It's just as much apart of American culture as television and football. What we gon' do with it? Are we going to continue to let it run it's course so that we'll have infinite genres and even more narrow sub-genres or will we fight until the real is represented?? Lyrics haven't fallen off if you take your eyes away from MTV and Power 99. And you don't even have to go underground to find it either. THere's a middle road which most of us on here travel. We follow cats that get some play but aren't in constant rotation but they're still representin' in their own way and doing a damn good job of it. And there are a host horrendous lyricist underground also. But we won't even go there.>> I believe that there was one, just like many other people do. That's the short answer. I do agree with you about Power99 in that you can't expect them to play anything that may be considered "underground". That's for damn sure. And you're right in that it's the fan's job to dig for a balance because radio ain't getting it. <<Actually, for a minute you didn't even mention Jay-Z in posts that weren't about him. Then you back to doing so. What happened????>> Huh?! This thread WAS about Jigga-boo and all I did was respond to the initial post. You STILL can do that, you know. And I've NEVER started a thread about him, I just respond to what I've read someone else thought about him. Nothing happened, you just "chimed in" a bit late. It happens.
