Fuck Fred Durst. That out of the way, I see the point that Dids is trying to make tho, and I agree--to an extent. I personally don't think anyone can BE hip hop in the first place. Sorry to say it, but I thought one of the best lines in hip hop history EVER was "Hip Hop/aint a way of life/it cant teach you to raise a kid and take care of your wife" or some shit like that. It was one of the few very nice Q-tip lines. Anyway, point being, for anyone who has any sense of perspective at ALL--Hip Hop is entertainment that you enjoy. Period. Hip Hop should not be a vital component of your existence. Hip Hop should not be the basis your life is lived on. Hip Hop is not anywhere near important enough to be included with real essentials like Food, Clothing, Shelter, Air, Water, Love, Hip Hop is a style of music. A style of dress. I can buy that. I can't buy that because someone raps over a drum beat that they BECOME that drumbeat, they become that record being scratched. Sure, that's some nice metaphorical poetic bullshit that sounds great when Common and Black Thought are babbling about it over some pillow-soft Questlove production, and is all noble and whatever, but Hip Hop is NOT something you can BE. Hip Hop is something you DO. What you can BE is a human being. What you can DO is make a certain style of music. Fred Durst makes really shitty rock and roll music--and every now and again he makes some really shitty hip hop songs. The fact that he makes shitty rock does NOT make the shitty hip hop songs NOT HIP HOP. They're still Hip Hop. They're just garbage. Anthony Kiedis likes to rap in his rock/funk songs. That's fine. The albums those songs are on are otherwise all funk/rock albums. those songs have some hip hop in em. The fact he uses Hip Hop does not make his rock and roll no longer ROCK AND ROLL. Anticon makes GOD AWFUL hip hop. The fact that the beats are ass and the rhymes are rhythmless mishmashes delivered by soulless assholes doesn't mean it's NOT HIP HOP. It's just WACK HIP HOP. If all Ugly Duckling has ever made were hip hop songs, and hip hop albums--then I don't understand how you can NOT call their music Hip Hop. This elitist bullshit goes on and on and has always gone on, and it's always been simply a weak substitute patch-up fill-in for something of greater importance that's apparently missing in someone's life. You know what hip hop is when you hear it. Just because it's fucking GOD AWFUL does not make it hip hop anymore, and here's the newsflash--even if YOU think so, you are not the be-all end all arbiter of what gets filed in what category of music. You have your opinion, and that's great, but your opinion does not change the fact that at the core of what Ugly Duckling is doing--it's hip hop music. Period. On certain songs--what Fred Durst is doing is Hip hop music. Whether it's good or bad does not change that fact. Fatboy
