Unwanted pop-up windows.....

How do you stop the pop-up windows that show up out of no where on your
computer with Windows XP? I don't mean the ones that pop-up while you're
surfing. I'm talking about the ones that just pop-up out of no where that
are beige in color and try to advertise products or services. I can close up
all my browsers and go to bed and in the morning here is this ad sitting on
my desk top. Of course I have a broadband connection so I'm always connected
to the Internet as long as my computer is on. But it's real annoying. I even
get the pop-ups now that advertise to Windows XP users how to get rid of the
pop-ups "forever" for a fee. Go figure.
