Annoying Messenger Pop Ups - Fix?

I wonder if anyone can help? When we went down to see some of my family
yesterday, my mums husband Geoff was complaining about some annoying pop
ups he was getting on his PC even though he did not have any net operated
programs on.
He has NTL BB which was installed using their mandatory install disc to set
up the connection. The pop ups have ' Messenger ' displayed in the heading
but he has never used MSN messenger.
He does have a Hotmail account but only views his mail on-line via the
Hotmail Web site. I installed ZA free edition on his PC for him but he did
not like having to configure the permission for every application and so
deleted ZA (It did stop the pop ups though).
I seem to recall someone mentioning annoying Messenger pop ups ages ago and
a fix to it? I cant help as I have never had these pop up Messenger ads as
I run ZA pro. Any help would be appreciated.
