Hi Eric,
although I don't like 'The Egyptian Mozart' that much; I can realize how
could it be interesting for someone who's not Egyptian. but me as
Egyptian, I find the 'traditional samples' as you say more interesting.
I also have origins form Sudan so, I'm well introduced to Sudanese
music as well.
I study music at Cairo conservatory & I'm also interested in Egyptian
history (with special attention to music).
I don't know what to say about this disaster; that there is no any concise
attention to Egyptian music in Egypt at all. most of the scholars
(scholars with bad quality & rarely found) are completely oriented to study
"what's so called" 'Arabic music'. I'd like to inform you that there is a
great difference between what's Arabic & what's Egyptian (or any other
politically Arabic region) not only in music but also in culture &
history. for me, I don't even call it 'Arabic music', I choose to remain
scientific & say "Turkish" music. so anyway. unfortunately there is no
constant study or performance or any attention to Egyptian music.
The only thing I can think about is a splendid CD produced by 'Real World
records'. they have a bunch of ethnic & regional music from all over the
world, & the one I'm telling you about is:
'The Music Of the Nile, Luxor to Isna'. this one is dedicated to Egyptian
music.
The real world CDs are popular every where so, where ever you live, I
think you'll find it. you may tray google. however, if you ask, I could
get you more details about the CD.
I also recommend you to ask in <soc.culture.egyptian> (&) if you're
interested in Egypt, you could join this newsgroup.
Regards,
Maysara
