My husband tends to monitor chatter in this newsgroup more than myself, and he told me tonight of the link at Baron's website, and that he had a hard time hearing the song at work. So I downloaded it and ran it through my wav editing software to decode it out of .mp3 format, then played it on my computer's high end speakers. Oh, boy... The first bars of the song really reminded me of Peter Gabriel's style. But that was only the very initial impression. When the Indian/Arabic riff started, I was up out of my chair and dancing. I do jazz and salsa anyway, but the back-beat and rhythmic line just pulled me up on my feet, much to Jeff's bemusement (he doesn't dance; his loss). After working up my heart rate a bit, I sat back down and really listened to the song. The better speakers brought out Sting's vocals a bit, but there is definitely an electronic "gloss" over his voice that makes it sound just a tad "fuzzy." And it does detract from vocal clarity. However, it fits the remix. My initial complaint--being a "dance person"--was that it ended too soon. I wanted to hear more! It struck me as similar to Indian dance music that one of my co-workers from a former job always had on in one of the labs. (We wasted a lot of time dancing around the benches on Fridays.) To help out hubby hear the fast vocals, I gave a close listen and picked out the lyrics, which only made the song more impressive to me. I wouldn't exactly describe myself as a hedonist, but Sting has encapsulated a lot of my own beliefs in this song. What I picked out is listed below, with question marks beside words I'm not quite sure if I heard correctly. My advice to anyone who is initially reacting with dislike to this song is to give it a listen on really good equipment. (I'll even offer to burn a CD for anyone who wants it.) The lyrics may come across as less than "poetic," but they are *powerful.* And the song doesn't appear to have been constructed around a melodic line but rather a rhythmic line. Most modern dance songs have this in common, since their main calling is to get you up on your feet. It doesn't make it a "bad" song, or even "not Sting's best work," just different. It's become almost common-place for Madonna to "reinvent" her music every so often, and yet for Sting it appears many listeners would prefer him to remain in a static state as far as his muscial evolution. This something I simply can't understand. Perception, and experiences, change everyone, and that's going to be reflected in the creative process. To be entirely honest, I've been listening to Send Your Love for the past hour while doing other stuff on the Web, and whenever I stick a song on repeat, I know I'm gone, man, solid gone... I *like* this song. Never ceases to amaze me that a person who doesn't really dance has this fantastic rhythm inside him... Yowza. ;-) ***Send Your Love -- Sting*** Send your love into the future Send your love into the distant dawn This is your night at the relay station A mission forward into the unknown We'll send a seed to a distant future And we can watch a galaxy growin' This ain't no time for dialing your power, this ain't no time for hidin' your care Climbin' down from an ivory tower, you've got a stake in the world we ought to share See the stars they're movin' so slowly, but still the earth is movin' so fast Can't you see the moon is so lonely, she's still trapped in the pain of the past This is the time of the world's collidin' This is the time of kingdoms fallin' This is the time when the world's dividin' time to heed your call Send your love into the future Send your precious love into some distant time I'll face that moon in tatters(?) with the love of your healin' Send your love Oh, send your love No religion but sex and music There's no religion but sound and dancing There's no religion but line and color There's no religion but sacred trance There's no religion but the endless ocean There's no religion but the moon and stars There's no religion but time and motion There's no religion just travelled stars Far better than to watch the ocean I see the ripples manage(?) in the distance It's just the same with all the emotion It's just the same in every instance No religion but the joys of rhythm No religion but the rights of spring No religion in the path of hate No prayer but the one I sing Send your love into the future Send your precious love into some distant time I'll face that moon in tatters(?) with the love of your healin' Send your love Oh, send your love No religion but sex and music There's no religion that's right or winnin' No religion in the path of hatred Ain't no prayer but the one I'm singin' Send your love... Send your love... Grrrrrrrrroowwwwllll -- -- /\ /\ | ^o o^ D.K.
