Fingerstyle guitarist David Surette made some good points about this in his introduction to "Down the Brae" (Mel Bay): ...I've also tried to keep the dance pulse alive in the dance tunes. Most of the pieces (with the possible exception of fast reels) should be playable at dance tempo, or in the company of other musicians at a dance or session. This is something that I would like to take the opportunity to encourage guitarists to do, for guitarists coming to Celtic music often seem to have listened more to other guitarists than to anything else.... As a classical musician who also plays guitar, I'd like to take this opportunity to encourage guitarists to listen to Bach as performed by other classical musicians on the original instruments. For example, I heard Jascha Heifetz's recording of the prelude to BWV 1006 on WGBH a couple of weeks ago. I didn't have my stopwatch with me, but I do believe he played it as fast as Parkening, if not as fast as Vidovic. It's wonderful to have newsgroups like this so we can share our delight in classical music. :) Will
