Ah MIDI, SchMIDI -- you know what I'm talking about. It's wrong to rob musicians of what little royalties they make from recordings. This applies especially to Hawaiian musicians, who ain't exactly getting rich through their dedication to making beautiful music. Under the current system, when you share music or video files, you're stealing from the artist. Why would anyone bother to record anything if they got no benefit from it (fame alone doesn't pay the rent). It's especially egregious in the case of Iz, who left a family that needs the income from his recordings. Maybe the music industry will someday institutionalize sharing to create a revenue stream for recording artists. Until they do, you're hurting the very atists whose creativity you enjoy. If you really hate the idea of supporting The Man, or whatever is the current term of abuse for the industry, and are morally obliged to get music only by free download, then you should be just as morally obliged to send a check to the artist whose music you're taking. Easy enough to work out how much they'd have gotten if you'd bought the CD or DVD. Call me cynical, but I somehow don't think there's a stream of small checks heading towards Iz's family, or any other Hawaiian artist for that matter. I'll say it again. If you want to own the music, buy a CD; if video lifts your skirt, buy the concert DVD. I personally have every Hawaiian CD I own copied on to the hard drive of my laptop so I can enjoy Hawaiian music while I'm travelling or whatever. Easy enough to do with RealPlayer -- trust me, if I can do it anyone can. Would any of the musicians out there who visit this newsgroup like to comment?
