Hello Friends, Here's the long awaited report on the Memories of Shankar Jaikishan programme held in Pune. On Saturday, 26th April, 2003, which was also 16th death anniversary of Shankar (of SJ duo), an audio-visual programme was organised at Fergusson Amphitheatre, Pune in memory of Shankar Jaikishan. The programme was organized by Dattaram Sanman Samiti in association with Survihar, Pune, Shankar Jaikishan Group & Sangeet Ke Sitarey Group on Yahoo and was presented by Dr. Padmanabh Joshi of ISRO, Ahmedabad and the author of Shankar Jaikishan biography in Gujarati - Sadabahar Sangeetna Yugsarjak. The programme commenced with a welcome speech by Dr. Prakash Kamath of Survihar. This was the 50th show of Survihar. Mayor of Pune city Ms. Dipti Choudhary was the Chief Guest of the programme. After a short speech, she felicitated Dr. Joshi and then handed over the cheque of Rs.25,000/- on behalf of Dattaram Sanman Samiti to Suresh Wadkar (a well-known fashion choreographer & not the famous singer), son of Shri Dattaram Wadkar. After the above short felicitation ceremony & exchange of bouquets, the programme started immediately. Dr. Padmanabhji made a brief speech about his memories related to Shankar Jaikishan and then started the programme. The very first clip that was shown was the Doordarshan News in Marathi & Hindi about Shanker's death on 26th April, 1987. After this, another clip was shown where Raj Kapoor expressed his grief on the demise of Shanker and then went on to talk about his association with the duo, their major role in the success of his films and other things at length. Then Dr. Padmanabhji informed about SJ's introduction to films through Raj Kapoor and prior to that, their involvement with Prithvi Theatres. A relevant clip of Shammi Kapoor talking about SJ's pre-Barsaat days was played. SJ had composed a signature tune for Prithvi Theatres during those days and a version by singer Suresh Wadkar was played during the programme. After this, an interview of Shanker from Tabassum's popular programme "Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan" was shown. Here Shanker is seen talking, among other things, about the first song they made for HFM, viz. "Ambuwa Pe Panchhi" which was later revised by Hasrat Jaipuri to "Hawa Mein Udta Jaaye" which was an instant hit with the masses...... followed by the video of this song. Dr. Padmanabhji also talked about the beautiful music piece before the song "Ye Mera Prem Patra Padhkar" and then it was played followed by the song. Similarly, there were many other interesting clips played with rare footage of Shanker, Jaikishan, Hasrat Jaipuri, Dattaram and others. A separate list of programme is attached herewith. Towards the end, a few of the songs had to be shortened due to lack of time. A video interview of SJ's arranger, Mr. Sebastian was also played. This was recorded by Dr. Joshi just a month before Sebastian passed away. One of the major highlights of the programme was the video footage of Dattaram recorded by Shahrukh Khan in Goa which was played during the programme. Here, Dattaram, among other things, talks about his association with Shankar Jaikishan, the introduction of innovative rhythms, specially in the song "Ghar Aaya Mera Pardesi". If I am not mistaken, this must be the only triplet-song ever used in HFM. It was really great to see Dattaram become very enthusiastic while talking about the golden period of HFM inspite of an advanced age and health problems. Dattaram was all praise for the rhythmist who played 'dholki' in these songs, "aisa laga jaise poori zindagi bhar ki 'dholki' usne isi gaane mein baja di, kya baat hain" After the show, we were fortunate to spend some time with Suresh Wadkar, he is one great interesting fellow and its a real treat to listen to him talk about his father's and his own association with HFM. On behalf of Dattaram Sanman Samiti, we take this opportunity to thank Dr. Padmanabh Joshi to share with us his rich treasure on Shankar Jaikishan and look forward to attending his other programmes in future also. A total of 28 songs were played before which Dr.Padmanabh shared some trivia associated with those songs. If we are not mistaken this must be the FIRST time members of various Yahoo! Groups came together to felicitate a LIVING artiste and we hope that we will come together in future also for similar programmes.
