wo muqaddar na rahaa - Shirin Farhad - 1931
Master Nissar - Brujlal Verma
In early 1971, an organization named Sangeet Manjiri had
arranged a programme called 'yaade.n' which has become
part of filmi folklore. They had gathered together
forgotten stars of Hindi film music and the stars
presented their songs. The programme had started with
Master Nissar's entry, dressed as Farhaad. He had sung
the song 'wo muqaddar na rahaa'.
Mr Jayaraman had attended the 'Yaaden' evening, as did
Madhav Moholkar and Shirish Kanekar. Moholkar and
Jayaraman later wrote articles about the evening;
Jayaraman's reminiscences were published in the August
1977 issue of Listeners' Bulletin.
The stars present included Wazir Muhammad Khan, singer of
the first Hindi song, Khan Mastana, Durrani, Surendra,
Rajkumari, Kalyani, Tuntun, Jagmohan, C H Atma, his
brother Chandru Atma and Naushad. Alas, the programme was
not recorded. Shirin Farhad's print is not available.
I believe 'Ayodhyaa kaa raajaa' is the oldest Hindi film
still available on print. Its Marathi version has been
transferred to VHS, but not the Hindi version due to lack
of funds. Apparently, no suggestions or requests about
the Hindi version have been made to the concerned people.
Is the Nissar song available? I think some enterprising
fellow in Mumbai is very likely to have recorded it in
his voice after the Yaaden programme. This is just a
guess. But it is certainly worth exploring whether the
song (sung in '70s but by the original singer himself)
has been preserved.
